Flora of Miami

Event Recap: Interconnectedness of nature, culture, and sustainability through the eyes of artist Nick Gilmore

In December, Flora of Miami hosted a truly thought-provoking event featuring environmental artist Nick Gilmore, who captivated us with his exploration of the interconnectedness of nature, culture, and sustainability. Nick’s work celebrates the iconic Dade-County pine, a symbol of South Florida’s history and natural beauty, by transforming salvaged old-growth wood into breathtaking works of art.

Through his presentation, Nick shared the story of this resilient tree, once a vital part of Florida’s ecosystems and now a rare treasure. His art not only showcases the beauty of this wood but also sparks reflection on our relationship with the environment and the need for sustainable practices.

The evening concluded with a fascinating discussion about slash pines. We explored how incorporating native pines into our gardens can foster biodiversity, sustainability, and resilience—key principles for any native landscape.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring journey into the history, art, and environmental significance of South Florida’s native treasures. Stay tuned for more events celebrating the intersection of art and nature at Flora of Miami!
